I was rousted out of a relaxing night of being a couch potatoe watching late-night sports by two urgent calls. They came almost on top of each other. The State Patrol called, saying they had found a car abandoned by the side of the highway between Forks and Port Angeles, its headlights still on. It was registered to a Mr. Mathew Hakes of Forks. They gave me the listed address, which I jotted down. There were signs of violence by the car - freshly disturbed ground and a lot of bloodstains - and several other sets of car tracks.
I was on the phone with my main deputy, making plans, when Forks Hospital called. A 16-year-old boy named Martin Richter had just been brought in with a knife in his chest and was already in emergency surgery. The hospital wanted help getting his parents there."Who found the boy? I need to talk to the ambulance team," I asked while my deputy held on the other line.
"No ambulance, sir," Mrs. Warren, the head social worker, replied. "Dr. Carlisle Cullen and his son brought the boy here themselves. They found him on their way home from Port Angeles and didn't think he could wait for an ambulance.""I need to talk to Dr. Cullen right away then," I said. I had no reason to doubt his word. It was just like him to be the Good Samaritan. But I wasn't too happy that he'd disturbed the crime scene, even if it couldn't be helped.
"Dr. Cullen is operating on the patient now, sir. The surgery could take several hours. But his son is here in the waiting room." Mrs. Warren sounded upset but very competent, obviously doing her best to be helpful. Serious violent crime was fairly rare in the Forks area, so this situation was far from routine."Good, tell him to wait for me there. Can you also make sure that I receive everything that was on the victim? And forensics will need to go over where he rode in Dr. Cullen's car."
"I'll have everything ready for you, Chief. I have the patient's wallet with his drivers licencse. Do you want the address? I don't know whether it's current."Then Charlie said"Yes please, what is it?" Even if it wasn't current, it was a good starting place. But when Martin Richter's address matched Matthew Hakes', that got my attention double! Sounded like the suspicious car and the stab victim could be directly connected.
"Thank you, Mrs. Warren, you've been a huge help," I told her, hoping to make her feel a little better. "I'll get right on finding the boy's parents."
I switched back to my deputy and sent him straight out to Matthew Hakes' car to begin the crime scene investigation.
It was easy to find the Hakes address. I parked silently in front of the old run-down mobile home in one of the poor neighborhoods on the fringe of Forks. The place wasn't a hazard, just very very humble. There were no lights showing. A very run-down SUV was parked in the driveway, with license tabs that would expire in less than three weeks.
Feeling the alert tension that always came when approaching an unknown door, I knocked loudly and also rang the doorbell, then stepped back and to one side of the door. He did not get a answer so he walked back to his cruiser . He then picked up his cell phone and dialed Quil's number . Then he said" Hey quil this is charlie. If you are still serious about wanting to train to be a deputy meet me back at the Sheriff Office As soon as possible." Then he ended the call and headed back to the office.
