”Okay Ms Fairbanks you’re free to go. Just take it easy on that ankle Okay? I don’t want to see you back here with your ankle swollen because you’ve been jogging before it heals properly,” Carlisle said holding the chart in his hands down at his waist. An easy smile was on his face as he looked at the young woman. He paused for the appropriate amount of time before adding, "The check up appointment will be sent to you through the mail. It will be in the out-patient clinic," He said before leaving the room to inform the nurses Ms Fairbanks was ready to leave the hospital and go home. He had a brief laugh with the nurses as he put the chart in the discharge pile after asking them to get the papers ready for Ms Fairbanks. After that he headed to his office to complete some paperwork. Paperwork was part of the job and while some doctors moaned and complained about this side of the job Carlisle loved being a doctor all too much to care that he was supposed to hate it. Paperwork meant he was in his clean and neat and tidy office, away from the clinical smell hospitals tend to breed. He loved helping people, all people but sometimes it was nice to get away from it all and relax with his paperwork and protocols. If he was perfectly honest after a while he ached to move at vampire speed and get it all done so he could be back out there in the halls doing circuits. Forks wasn't exactly the most exciting place to live (for a normal human) so there wasn't exactly emergencies breaking down his door every five minutes. Maybe they'd get a drunk or two, someone falling out a tree or a bike accident but that was about as exciting as it got. Even without the vampire speed to help him out he was still the fastest at filling in the paperwork, or so he was informed by slightly bemused colleagues who could never understand who he managed to finish so quickly. Carlisle was just so passionate about his job that nothing would stop him from doing it.
His paperwork was piled at the side of his desk according to dates which transferred to the left hand side of his desk as he steadily worked through it. Being a vampire with an increased ability to concentrate on everything he could allow his paperwork to slide, upon occasion and still get it done in a decent time. Carlisle Cullen was never ever late with paperwork...except perhaps when he was dealing with the newborns and Bella’s unexpected and unusual (but apparently not unique or impossible pregnancy). Having been impeccable before hand, the hospital never complained, though Carlisle had heard talk behind his back about what could possibly distract Dr Cullen enough for him to neglect his work. Glad things were back to an almost normal regime, Carlisle was once again in his almost perfect routine. The Pure Ones lingered on his mind but for now all he cared about was filling in the paperwork in the correct fashion. Carlisle was just finished all his work when he heard a knock on the door. He got up right away and opened it, a pleasant smile fixed on his face as he said hello.

The day had been dragging on, pulling Stella down even further. It had been months since she had left Texas, and still, she was homesick. And living alone didn't help much either. The only thing that had kept her going was working at that darn hospital. It was something that she enjoyed, and had the passion for. But then, some-day's happened to be a little tougher than she had expected. Watching someone die, and pronouncing them dead was the hardest part she had to endure. It was as if she was loosing she was close too. Being a nurse wasn't anything easy, it was more of a gift to her.
Standing at the desk, she gently leaned over it placing her chin in the palm of her hand. Of course, it had to be a slow day since the weekend was coming. Rolling her eyes at another nurse, Stella let out a small and relieving sigh. Only two more hours to go and she was out of there. Nothing was bound to stop her. Not even the piles of paper work and patients she had to go through. Sitting back in her chair, she watched as the young Doctor. Cullen came her way, dropping some discharge papers in front of her. As soon as she though it was done, she ended up getting swamped with more things to do. Grasping the papers, she grabbed a pen and handed it to the patient. One of her friendly smiles spread like butter across her face. "Now, please listen to him this time Mrs. Fairbanks. You wouldn't want to come back and then have surgery on it now would you?" Sighing the papers, she kept a copy and handed one to her.
After allowing the woman to leave, Stella got up from her chair and began to make her way down towards the doctors office. There were day's when she didn't mind taking him his paperwork, and then there were others when she did. The thing she had mostly hated about it was walking in on him while he had been busy at work. It wasn't like her to be such a bother, but lately, she rather enjoyed his company ever since her break up. It seemed he had the best advise, and really, she rarely confided in anyone.. but him. Her heels stopped quickly at the door as she noticed it was open just a crack. What was she doing? Perhaps having another nurse to deliver would have been better than herself. She wasn't the best with her social skills when it came to him.
Gently, she raised her hand and began to knock lightly at the door. Her heart raced as she heard his chair roll back, and his soothing voice welcoming her into his office. Slowly she pushed the door opened and walked in. Her long brown hair drifting softly over her shoulders. The young doctor had seemed to be looking her way she she strode into the room, placing the papers down onto his desk. "Here are the papers you had asked for Mr. Cullen." Her beautiful blue eyes focused on him as she tried her best not to stare. 'stop it!' she fussed in her head. :Mrs. Fairbanks is headed back home now, and I told her to stay off of it also or else surgery had to be done." Being and RN was almost as difficult as a Doctor, but then again, she had nothing on his job whatsoever.

Work at a hospital was never over. Work at a hospital was hard and rigorous and it never stopped. Carlisle was glad he couldn’t feel fatigue or exhaustion. He faked sleeping when it was appropriate knowing that was a human thing to do. Some of his moves were calculated to make him seem normal, while the rest came naturally. He did not have to think about breathing, or moving every five minutes or so, or the speed of his walk. These things all come naturally after years of concentrated practice. Lying down in the dark surrounded by silence on the beds reserved for on call doctors was rather relaxing. There was nothing but him, the dark and a tiny little room. It was a shame all that time had to be wasted so when the person who came to fetch him could see him lying sleeping just as he should be. Being human could be such hard work. Being a doctor was easy. If acting as a human was the price he had to pay for being a doctor then it was more than worth it. Carlisle didn’t mind anyway. Humanity was a cherished commodity.
The hardest thing about being a doctor was failing. He hated failing patients: failing to treat them, failing to calm them, failing to treat them in time and even worse; pronouncing them dead. Helping people was the best feeling in the world but not being able to was a crushing blow. Carlisle feared more than anything failing his own family. There was nothing worse than seeing them go through a hard time and having to stand by and do nothing. He felt to terribly useless over Jasper’s vegetarian troubles. Jasper tried so hard and found it so difficult. There was nothing else he could do for him. He was so proud of him. He worked so hard and kept going when it would be easier to go back to the nomadic life he had been leading. Carlisle did all he could to help everyone he met to the best of his ability. Not being able to help cut like a knife. He knew most doctors and nurses felt that way. He felt most for the nurses in the hospital who got instructions from doctors, dealt with the patients all the time and kept this place running. A hospital just didn’t work without well trained nurses. It was important for all doctors to keep them sweet because they did things for doctors that weren’t in their job descriptions. Things could get extremely ugly extremely quickly.
Carlisle shuffled in his chair slightly out of habit. Deep in concentration he methodically filled in the paperwork as though it was the most engrossing activity in the world. In reality his mind was wandering ever so slightly but it would not be long before his task was done. The minutes ticked by until the task was just about completed and a knock clicked on his door. Stella stood at the threshold informing him that the papers he had requested earlier were in her hand. She was staring. That was no problem. Carlisle had three hundred years to become used to being stared at. His very being enticed all of those who saw him into coming closer. A lot of humans took a step or two closer after seeing him whether they realised it or not. Some did, and corrected themselves; some did and didn’t care and others were just...well...taken in by the design, he supposed. Carlisle was in no way vain, but it would not be for the first time that there had been whispers of whether or not he had been a model in his youth – perhaps to pay for bills? There was nothing wrong with gossip as long as it was harmless fun. There was no way to stop them from talking anyway.
Carlisle smiled, stood and walked over to her. He took the papers gently out of her hands, careful to avoid physical contact but making the movements seem natural. He could put down his freezing skin down to the fact the hospital was either poorly heated or well ventilated or laugh it off with a ‘warm heart’ joke, which in his case just happened to be true. ”Thank you Stella,” He said, the smile reaching his eyes as it always did. Nine times out of ten, he meant the things he said and did. The rest of the time it was because he was being strong for his family. Sometimes leading a coven of vampires could be extremely difficult and wearing. He did his best. ”Yes, that’s good. No one likes surgery. And it’s expensive,” he said standing next to Stella and looking down into her blue eyes. They really were sharp colour, weren’t they? Her heart was beating rather fast, as it always did when he was around. Again it was most likely from the effect of staring a vampire in the face. They may be beautiful and alluring creatures but they were often deadly. He wondered how much she would like him, if he knew he sucked the blood of animals, and potentially hers, to survive. ”How are you today Stella?” he asked. She was going through a hard time lately. Things varied day to day. Some days she wanted to talk, others she didn’t.

The room was a little shaded. More than normal, but then again, it was much easier on her eyes since she had been contracting splitting migraines. As soon as Carlisle reached for his papers, Stella couldn't help but smile. The man had such a kind heart, and an easy listening ear. It was nice to have him around. Most of the nurses in the hospital had seemed to despise her since she had begun talking to him about all of her problems. What could she say? He was a good friend of hers now. It made her feel a little better about herself knowing she was beginning to actually make friends and acquaintances in Forks. Besides having her cousin's Jake and Rachel. It just wasn't the same.
Following him over towards his desk, Stella pulled one of the chairs that sat close to the wall up towards his desk. Making herself comfortable in the chair, Stella gently crossed her legs, letting out a loud sigh. Yes, life had been stressful for her at the moment. Moving wasn't easy, but you think she would have gotten over that months ago. "Not a problem." Placing her chin on her hand, she glanced to Carlisle. It seemed she was always the one who had ended up getting first dibs on all of his paperwork. Not saying she didn't enjoy it, since it was a reason to take a break every once in a while. Tugging on her scrubs, she looked down to pick off a couple pieces of fuzz. "I know I wouldn't want to go through surgery for a very, long time. I have watched you perform that plenty of times, and it just isn't my cup a tea." A small chuckle escaped her lips as she looked out the window. Working until late night had her terribly drained. But working with the patients was well worth the time.
Un-crossing her legs, Stella looked up to Carlisle. Biting down on her lower lip, she slightly shook her head. "Well, my day is going much better now that I get to sit her and sump it all out on you." Laughing again, she slightly rolled her eyes hoping she didn't sound like a complete and total fool in front of him. All she had wanted to do was make him feel comfortable as well. "No, but really. It actually went pretty well. I still like Michelle hates me since I am always running your errands. I always seem to catch her scowling at me in the break room. Haven't quite figured out what her problem was just yet." Picking slightly at her nails, one of Stella's cheeky grins ran softly across her face. She had an idea on why the girl disliked her. All she would hear out of her mouth every day was on how adorable the doctor was. And don't think she didn't hear her say rude comments behind her back.
Getting up out of her chair, Stella made a seat on his desk like usual. It wasn't uncommon that was for sure. It was just the way she was. Always trying to get close to someone in order to even converse. "And what about your day Dr. Cullen? Anything new happen to you?" Pulling her long dark brown hair to the side, She gently placed her hand down on his desk slightly leaning on it. "I'm sure your life has to be a little more exciting than mine." She watched as his eyes sparkled in the dim light. They were always such a pretty, and yet unusual color. But that never bothered her. They were still beautiful.

The blinds were closed over. The usually were in his office so as not to arouse suspicion. Who in their right mind would close their blinds to a sunny day: especially a sunny day in Forks? Forks was such a dreary town. Even the possibility of sunshine brought a spark of excitement into the hearts of all the inhabitants. Carlisle dreaded days of sunshine. And he loved them. He couldn't come into work for obvious reasons (or obscure ones for the humans), and he missed it. He missed helping his patients deal with their illnesses, chatting to Stella and the other doctors and being a good human all around. On the other hand he got to be with his family without interruption because the entire hospital staff believed he was up in the mountains out of cell range. He might very well be, but that chance of him being at the house relaxing with his wife were far higher. Carlisle didn't like lying but it was necessary. Even though the volturi had been disbanded there was no knowing what kind of repercussions would arise from the wrong human discovering vampires actually existed. It was potentially devastating. So the blinds stayed shut all the time and Carlisle claimed he preferred a slightly twilight atmosphere for a reason he just couldn't explain. Luckily no one really wanted to know the answer anyway.
"Ms Fairbanks is definitely a stubborn lady," Carlisle said with a kind smile. She was a tough one. she was always coming in about her ankles or knees. The woman did a fair amount of running. Actually, she did a great deal of running and somehow always managed to injure herself somehow. She tripped once and broke a toe. Getting her to use crutches and been an utter nightmare - and he had a bundle of vampiric children living at home, all of whom were incredibly stubborn and wanted to get their own way. Life certainly never lacked for entertainment. Sometimes it felt like the hospital was the only slice of normalcy he got. What was more normal than going to work every day then clocking out and going home? Carlisle liked the routine. "At least she takes plenty of exercise. I've told her more than once she does too much," Carlisle said with a sigh. The older she got the more difficult it would be for her body to heal the damage it sustained. One day it wouldn't just be a bandage and a week's course of painkillers. One day she was going to have to undergo surgery, or perhaps not be able to run at all. Human bodies were only designed to handle so much wear and tear.
Carlisle wasn't one to partake in human gossip. However how did one find out things if they did not gossip in the slightest? Gossiping was such a human thing to do so he did have small conversations which touched upon the behaviour and life of other people. He was a normal human doctor after all. A lot of doctors acted like they were God's gift from Heaven because they could heal and that gave them a special kind of power. It wasn't quite the power of life and death but sometimes it came very close. For those who abused their power it most certainly was the power of life and death. Carlisle didn't do what he did to feel powerful, or for others to feel indebted to him. In fact he was downright horrified when anyone expressed more than gratitude towards him. Yes, being thanked was always a nice touch, and while not necessary was part of common courtesy. Without doctors humans got sicker and they died when they could easily have survived - or sometimes survive with a fight and someone on their side rooting them along all the way. He just wanted to be viewed as a normal human. so when Stella touched upon the topic of Michelle Carlisle felt he should force himself to elaborate, if only a little on the matter. "I'm not sure Michelle knows what she wants from anyone. And that includes herself," Carlisle said sadly. "That's a tragic thing. She'll never be happy if she doesn't accept no one is perfect," He added. Michelle seemed to want everything done a certain way. Perhaps Carlisle should give some of his stuff to some other nurses? Would that even make a difference? He didn't really want to. He liked talking to Stella. But then, the closer she was to him, the closer she was to finding out his dark secret.
"Oh no. Nothing out of the ordinary for me. Well...perhaps an unusual amount of paperwork I may have allowed to drag on a little," Carlisle admitted. There was a bit more than normal but only by two cases. He wasn't sure why he allowed it to build that fraction more than he usually did. It might be because he was slightly distracted by Leah. Leah was refusing to go to hospital because he was here. It was a pretty silly and self spiteful reason but Leah never had been the happiest of people. In fact she was extremely angry. Hmm..."Actually...I have a small favour I would like to ask of you. Well, it's bigger than small to be honest," Carlisle said waiting for her to respond.

Listening to him discuss about Michelle brought her to full attention. She agreed. The girl would never be happy if she kept it up! Pulling herself away from his desk, she also listened to him talking about his paperwork. Yes, he did indeed let that build up just a bit too much, but after all, he was a doctor. They were always busy with something, and out of all honesty, she knew she couldn't handle what he had done. Being an LPN was a little more her range. "Allowing your paperwork to build up isn't really that much of a bad thing." Grabbing a handful, she held it close to her chest and smiled. It seemed every night she found herself helping him with his paperwork, even though she wasn't allowed too. A few weeks ago, the poor girl found herself staying overtime because of it all. "I know I wouldn't want you job, that is for sure." With one of her friendly smiles, Stella patted him gently on his back.
Making herself comfortable over at the other desk, Stella sat the paperwork down in front of her and pulled out a ball point pen. She noticed Dr. Carlisle hadn't been kidding when he had spoke to her about mounds of work. Letting off a soft sigh, she began to mark through the work. Again with another long night. Then again, at least she had company for the time being until he decided to up and leave early. She knew he had a family, but they were old enough to take care of themselves. Or well, from what she had seen. And oddly enough, they were all beautiful. Not one of them had an ounce of age on their face. Something she had hoped to look like when she had hit her thirties. Making a small pile on the other side of her, she raised her head gently and glanced back over to him.
Zoning back off into her papers, she heard him begin to speak of a favor. Raising a brow, she turned to look over at him. What he had meant by favor, she had no idea. Stella knew Carlisle had heard about her cousin Jacob and his new girlfriend who was pregnant. Who hadn't? But apparently, the man knew more. And it was exactly what she had known. Taking in a deep breath, followed by a stressing swallow, Stella placed her pen down. "Yes sir, and what might that be?" Yes, she knew her cousin happened to be a wolf. For crying out loud, he had come to her first for help since she was a nurse. Maybe not the best, but she knew damn well what she was doing. "Is their something wrong Doctor?"

Carlisle could understand the aversion to paperwork. Lots of humans had it. He grumbled about it because it was, apparently, the normal thing to do. He was careful not to invest in being too normal because then that would make him get noticed too. It was a delicate practice but he had three hundred years of experience under his belt. He wasn't over cautious but he definitely erred on the side of playing it safe. He had to. Life was too precarious for a vampire under the best circumstances in such an exposed position. Few would dare to pull of a regular working job, especially not one that was as high stress as his. To be honest, Carlisle found solace in his profession: not stress. Stress came in the form of power hungry vampires hell bent on destroying his family. "Oh I don't know," Carlisle said with a smile. "It's alright if you just get it done. The longer the wait the more dreaded paperwork you have to complete," He said before adding "Then there's the added pressure of getting it done all at once because you'll cause problems if you don't,"
Carlisle said down and waited for a few moments. "It's Leah," he said, deciding to just come out with it. "She's refusing to see a doctor, or come here," he said. This was a little awkward and Leah would probably be mad at him but it had to be done. "I was hoping you might speak with her. Get her to come to the hospital or see if she's going to one in Port Angeles or Seattle," Carlisle said. He was concerned. He might be a 'leech' as they liked to put it, but he still had a soft heart. Leah could be suffering complications already and not know it. The baby had to be monitored and checked. If Leah's health suffered and she was too stubborn to get help...Carlisle had to admit he was fascinated by the pregnancy but a life was still a life. Carlisle wouldn't jeopardize that for mere curiosity. Ever.
NOTES: I am so sorry for the rubbishness of this post. >.<

Her stomach began to twist and turn as she watched Carlisle go over all the papers. What was it with her and him? Yes, she understood they had been very close friends, but she was also very curious about him. It seemed he had never aged a day. Well, then again, she had only known him for a year or two if not that. Nodding slowly, she placed all the finished papers in one pile, flashing him a smile. This was what she had looked forward to everyday. Spending quality time with him. Stella wasn't too sure if that was normal or not. He was a married man. That was line she wouldn't step across, and she wasn't going to allow that to happen. So, he was a beautiful man. And she too was a beautiful young woman. But nothing would become of the two. And she knew that for sure.
Pushing he hair to the side, she listened to Carlisle bring up the Leah and Jake pregnancy. Stopping in her tracks, Stella took in a deep breath. She was shocked that he would have even brought up the subject. Especially in public, but then again no one was around. Biting her lower lip, Stella looked to him. "I have been trying my best to take as good of care with Leah as possible. And, she has grown rapidly." Fooling with her small strands of hair, she looked down to the ground. "I can do my best to get her in. But if you don't already know, she is a very stubborn woman. It's like trying to move a mountain. Impossible." A small chuckle escaped her mouth. Indeed, it was funny and yet very true. Being Leah's nurse wasn't the easiest thing in the world.
Looking to the time, she picked up all of the papers and hauled them over to his desk. "There." She smiled, slapping them down. "Finally done, and out of our way." Stella knew she would have to head back to her lonely place she had called home. It was different living by herself. No one to talk to besides Rachel, Jake, or Leah. And that wasn't too often. It was scary being by herself. But ever since her split with her ex, it just wasn't the same. She was used to her house being loud, and booming with people and parties. "Well, I guess here is where i withdraw from the hospital yet again." Patting her hand down gently on his desk, she turned in the other direction and headed for the door. "I will be sure to talk to Leah also." A small, friendly smile spread like butter across her face. Someone to spend time with would have been nice. But obviously not tonight.
Notes: Its fine. (: No worries. Haha I hope you don't mind with my posts.
